Tutu Mele Touch Ups

Dan Nakamoto (foreground) and Dennis Loveland remove Tutu Mele’s glasses for a polish in preparation for the 2018 Honolulu City Lights festival.
The much-loved 18-foot statue and her friends receive cleaning, repairs and necessary touch ups every year. City staff assembles the figures on the grounds of Honolulu Hale for opening celebrations the first Saturday of December. Tutu Mele’s 21-foot, 2-ton husband, Shaka Santa, was unveiled in 1989 and she joined in 1994. Her right hand was raised in a wave originally but it blocked her face, so it was lowered in 1995.
