Her brother’s health battle inspired a career in medicine

Meet Dr. Lopez

Kristi Lopez, M.D., is a gastroenterologist (digestive system doctor) and HMSA participating provider.

Dr. Lopez was introduced to the importance of quality care and the value of HMSA at an early age. When her brother was 8 years old, he was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare and serious condition that occurs when the bone marrow cannot make enough new blood cells. Her brother needed a bone marrow transplant, which was successful.

As Dr. Lopez reflects on that difficult time, she remembers the peace of mind HMSA provided to her parents.

“HMSA helped where a lot of the medical expenses were covered, and my parents didn’t have to worry about the finances. They provided a great service to our family,” she shares.

Today, Dr. Lopez’s brother is healthy and active. The siblings enjoy playing soccer and diving together in their free time.

Her brother’s health battle inspired Dr. Lopez to go into medicine. With extensive training, including three years of residency, three years of fellowship training, and three years of clinical practice, Dr. Lopez performs various procedures including colonoscopies and endoscopies. She has special interests in digestive health issues and colon cancer prevention.
