When severe weather threatens our State, the KHON2 Weather Team of Justin Cruz, Kamaka Pili and Chevy Chevalier comes together to provide up-to-the-minute forecasts, weather updates and critical information to help keep residents informed and safe.

Justin Cruz leads the severe weather coverage. “The wall-to-wall coverage of pending natural disasters is always a challenge, but the most rewarding,” he says. Educating the public and informing them of potential threats is key in helping people prepare and protect themselves and their families. The objective is to stay ahead of severe weather threats, to ensure that everyone can be prepared and ready if and when disaster strikes our islands.

Kamaka Pili brings his own special touch to the science of weather. His reports reflect the importance of Native Hawaiian culture, and he often includes Hawaiian language and cultural references. The Kamehameha Schools and University of Hawaii graduate feels it’s his kuleana to share Hawaii’s history and unique culture while helping to spread the message of aloha. Kamaka is grateful “to be able to provide important information that everyone wants and needs to know” in that context.

Chevy Chevalier is the newest member of the KHON2 weather team, adding 23 years of meteorology experience, including having worked at the National Weather Service. He brings a wealth of knowledge about weather and ways in which climate can impact weather events. Chevy has been awarded the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal of approval. This distinction is given to broadcast meteorologists who demonstrate the highest level of competency and expertise in communicating climate information, hydrology, and complex weather.
