Say “Yes” to Celebrating Small Businesses with First Hawaiian Bank
First Hawaiian Bank Assistant Vice President & Business Banking Officer Doug Okamura shares some advice as well as his experience helping small business owners evolve as their needs expand.

Small businesses and the individuals behind them play important roles in our communities. Hawaii Business magazine and First Hawaiian Bank are celebrating Small Business Month by talking to bankers who are passionate about helping local entrepreneurs thrive with the right tools and team. In our first installment, First Hawaiian Bank Assistant Vice President & Business Banking Officer Doug Okamura shares some advice as well as his experience helping small business owners evolve as their needs expand.
“Every customer is different and it’s important to tailor the financial advice we provide to each specific business owner’s needs,” he says.
Okamura assists small business owners with a wide variety of banking services, from opening new accounts, applying for a new loan, extending a line of credit, diversifying with commercial real estate.
For example, there are things startups may not realize they need, like more than one checking account to organize and streamline revenue and paying employees and bills. “If you’re running everything out of one account, life can get a little more difficult,” Okamura says.
Okamura also recognizes that small businesses evolve over time. He uses his diversified skillset to assist with on-going financial maintenance, business expansion, succession planning, and the myriad of issues that arise during the life of a business.
“Our customers are best at what they do, whether running a restaurant, retail store, or construction business, but they might not be an expert on finances and banking,” he says. “That’s our job. As the business changes, we can make recommendations, and bring in some extra partners like a CPA or attorney if needed. Each step along the way is customized depending on the situation the business owner presents.”
