Mechanic John Thompson completes an inspection after repairing the flat tire that this Biki bike was brought in for. “On average Biki bikes are serviced in the workshop four times a year,” says Kelsey Colpitts, marketing and communications manager at Bikeshare Hawaii, the nonprofit managing Biki. There are two full-time and two part-time mechanics keeping the wheels rolling on the 1,300 bicycles stationed across Honolulu. Colpitts says Biki clocked 1.1 million trips in 2018, with 65 percent taken by residents. “Biki is the brand of a private, public and nonprofit partnership … which is a unique structure as most systems are city owned and operated,” she says.
