Leadership Conference 2018

AFTERNOON SESSION

The Rise of the Expert Generalist
Many of history’s most impactful individuals such as Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Marie Curie and Leonardo da Vinci to name a few, have upended conventional wisdom by leading across multiple disciplines. Traditionally, we have been told that specialization leads to mastery, which leads to success. But the “expert generalist” way is the opposite: they study many fields, finds deeper principles that connect them and apply the principles. In this talk story, visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist Henk Rogers discusses this new way of leading.
Featured Speaker:
Henk Rogers, Founder & Board Chair, Blue Planet Foundation
Henk Rogers is an activist, visionary and entrepreneur whose many passions include environmental protection, human colonization of the Moon, and technology innovation. Henk is the founder and chairman of Blue Planet Foundation, whose mission is to lead Hawaii’s transition to clean energy. His tireless efforts helped pave the way for Hawaii to enact a policy that calls for electric utilities throughout the state to rely on 100% renewable energy by 2045.
Henk is also the founder and chief executive officer of Blue Planet Energy, one of the leading providers of energy storage systems (i.e., batteries) that power homes, businesses and utility grids. The company’s groundbreaking technology is advancing the state of the art for the safety, reliability and energy output of battery systems.
Apart from his environmental work, Henk is the founder of the International MoonBase Alliance, which has brought together the most prominent, progressive and ingenious scientists, futurists, engineers and business people from the private sector, government agencies, universities, and research labs to make space colonization a reality.
Despite his many philanthropic endeavors, Henk is perhaps best known as the founder and chief executive officer of Blue Planet Software, which owns the worldwide rights to the Tetris franchise. Tetris is one of the most popular video games in history, with more than 35 million units sold for the Nintendo Game Boy alone.
Prior to his tremendous success with Tetris, Henk was a pioneer in Japan’s fledgling computer game industry in the 1980s. He led the development of Japan’s first-ever role playing game (RPG), Black Onyx, and he is known in Japan as “the father of RPG.”
