On Peter Nicholson’s 51st birthday last New Year’s Day, his wife gave him a membership to the Honolulu Club. Nicholson didn’t mind as his life entered, as he puts it, the “not quite as fit as I used to be” phase. As soon as he joined, his wife set him up with a personal trainer and he immediately saw results, dropping 10 pounds of fat but putting it back on in the form of muscle mass. It also helped him become Hawaii’s Fittest Executive in the men 50 and over category.
The training also gave him consistency. “I just had an erratic type of routine, and this gave me a regular routine where I had to schedule [training sessions] a couple of times a week,” Nicholson says. But he is no stranger to exercise. Some of his favorite activities include heli-skiing in Canada and racing his 20-foot catamaran out of Kaneohe Bay.
As the sole proprietor of Nicholson Geotechnical, he provides consulting on construction engineering projects like slopes, dams and retaining walls. Most of his work is done in the field, so he needs to stay in shape to hike and climb mountains around the job sites.
Nicholson is also an associate professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where he teaches one course a semester. Rarely does he take the elevator, opting to jog up and down five flights of stairs several times a day.
